3.5. Lesson 4 - Adding an Item to a Project

Once you create a project, you can start adding project items to record your services and expenses.

There are two types of items in Fanurio: service items and expense items. Expenses are billed in units while services can be billed in hours or units, depending on what you need. For hourly-rated services, the quantity is determined based on the amount of recorded time.

Note: You can only add time to services, it doesn't make sense to add time to expenses. Time can be recorded using a timer or it can be entered manually.

Items can also be marked as billable or non-billable but only billable ones can be invoiced to your clients. Non-billable services are useful if you want to track non-chargeable activities.

If you want to add an item to a project, here's what you need to do:

  1. Open a project,

  2. Click the New button under the items table to choose the type of item you want to create,

  3. From the New popup menu select:

    1. New Service Item to create a service or

    2. New Expense Item to create an expense or

    3. A service or expense category if you defined any in Business » My Business Details+Services and Rates.

Item categories can help you create an item faster since rates are filled in automatically when used. Let's assume that you have defined three categories like in the previous lesson. The popup will contain two entries (one for each type of item: New Service Item and New Expense Item) plus another three (one for each item category you have defined).

Note: Service items can also be discounted but that's discussed in depth in a different section.
