3.5. Lesson 4 - Adding an Item to a Project

Once you create a project, you can start adding project items to record your work. For each item, you can specify a name, a description and how long you have worked for it. The time spent on each item can be recorded using a timer or it can be entered manually.

But more than that, an item contains billing information. You can specify for each item how it should be billed. An item can be:

  • non-billable - it will not be invoiced

  • hourly rated - it will be invoiced at an hourly rate based on its time

  • flat rate - it will be invoiced at a flat rate for a specified number of units

When you are adding a new item to a project, it usually means that you are performing some kind of service for the client. That's why you can associate a service with an item in the billing section. When a service is associated with an item, Fanurio uses by default the service rate for that item.

When you click the New button to create a new item, a popup menu that lets you choose what kind of item you want to create appears. Let's assume that you have defined three services like in the previous lesson. The popup will contain three entries (one for each type of item: non-billable, hourly rated or flat rate) plus another three (one for each service you have defined). The difference between the first three and the last three is that the last ones will be associated with a service.

Note: Each item can be discounted but that's a different topic that is discussed in a different section.
